Girls' Piano Recital

This picture shows most of our piano teacher's students Friday night after the recital. Once again, Shiloh did not want to do it and came through with flying colors anyway. Each time it strengthens her to overcome her fears, and she is really humbling to watch as she prays to be calm. Cora is a natural performer and doesn't mind playing for 6 or 60 people. Oh, I wish I had had her ability in high school! I told them the embarrassing story of signing up for a speech class because I knew I'd be going to West Point and I wanted to learn to speak better in public. Well, I totally broke down during my first speech and started crying. IN HIGH SCHOOL. Yeah. That earned me some major cool points. Thankfully, that NEVER happened at West Point. Phew. I'm glad Shiloh is learning how to stand up in front of people now! The quality on these videos is not great since it came from our camera instead of a video camera, and there was a rather active baby behind Daniel. :) Enjoy our lovely girls! Cora is playing "Home on the Range" in the first one. She's a little far from the piano because she forgot to adjust the bench. :) Shiloh and Cora are playing "How Much is that Doggie in the Window" in the second - a duet which led to some...interesting practice sessions. :) The staccato chords played together are the "barks." Shiloh is playing my favorite piece, "Sky Blue." I love its dreamy quality. You miss hearing all of the notes with the poor sound quality, but come visit and she'll play it for you! :)

A Visit from the Texans

Last weekend we hosted Daniel's sister and her family. They were on a whirlwind tour of the East Coast, driving from San Antonio and spending a month on the road and with family. They are a brave family. :) Natalie and Cecelia got to sleep in the girls' room with them, so we had a houseful of girls! We got to meet our new niece, Analise, who was born on Abigail's birthday this year. Analise had great cheeks, and she was a very content baby. We never had one of those. :)

Do you see a trend here? Wherever there is a baby, there is Cora holding the baby. :)Umm...when did Cora grow up this much? Doesn't she look lovely? Daniel took the picture and then brought it to me; he was all sad and nostalgic.

Shiloh wanted to get a picture of how cute Analise's legs were. I agreed that they were pretty cute and gave her the camera.

Cecelia needed a warm lap to snuggle, and Uncle Daniel was happy to oblige!

The girls are investigating things on our walk to Kohr Bros. Frozen Custard shop. I am really going to miss being able to walk .7 of a mile to get some frozen custard!

Jackson was VERY, VERY taken with Analise, and he walked the entire way there and back holding Analise's hand. He also took it upon himself to entertain her at all times and put her pacifier back in when she needed it. It was adorable.

Look at those cute cousins holding hands! Adah was a good protector for Cecelia, holding tightly to her hand and helping her along. She is a such a sweetie. Cecelia made her giggle from her silliness and laughter.

Here's Jackson with his "charge."
Nathaniel wanted to hold her on his lap, too. I think his hold is more like a full Nelson (half Nelson?). Jackson was hovering, not sure if this was okay.

All the cousins on Sunday night ready for bed. They are patient to put up with us.

We had a more posed shot, but I snapped this one when Sara said something funny and the kids cracked up. They so enjoyed one another's company, and I'm sad they live so far away!!!
What a blessing it was to worship with them and have family worship together in the evenings. We had such a wonderful time with them, and we made some great memories with the kids.

Visit to Williamsburg

Hello!
How is everyone? We are enjoying some beautiful weather here in VA - cool mornings and sunny, warm afternoons. It's a nice break from the rain!
I'm catching up on photos after I organized the schoolroom/dining room and prepared it for all the new curricula arriving. Here are a few pictures from our trip to Williamsburg at the end of April to meet with friends from Colorado Springs (from a LONG time ago!).
Explanations are underneath.

Adah read and read and read to Lydia and Addie while we were there. Lydia and Addie belong to my friend Brittany, who now has three adorable girls. She knew Daniel and me before Shiloh was even a twinkle in our eyes.

And here is Cora with her third adorable girl, whose name is Margaret. They call her Daisy, though. :) If there are babies to be held, Cora is volunteering for the job.
Here I am with Brittany and Cyndi. Cyndi is the quintessential hostess, and I believe she owns enough china to feed about 60 people. She instantly makes me feel at home.
Cyndi and Lanning!!! These are two people that God used in a mighty way to help us during the struggling days of our early marriage. They are AWESOME.
This face has nothing to do with Williamsburg. :) This is the face that I get during school sometimes. Fun, huh? :) I had just taken her hair out of twists, and I wanted to get a picture of her crazy hair. She is giving me the "attitude" look.

Next post is pictures from our visit with Daniel's sister and her crew. We had a full house, and we loved it!

Hurrah!

We finished up school on Friday, had a BUSY day Saturday with shopping and partying and picking out paint colors, hosted friends on Sunday, and had our walk-through today. Phew! The house looks fabulous, and we are eager to see if the quotes that come back for painting and the fence are do-able for our budget. I would really like to stop taking Roscoe out on the leash every time he has to go (not that I do it every time - Shiloh would like to stop as well! :) ).

Here's a funny story from the last day of school. Abigail and Adah had their last grammar test on Friday, and part of the test involved alphabetizing. Abigail was eager to be done because it was after lunch and she wanted to play. She was hurrying through her work and shouted to me while I was folding laundry:
Abigail(panicked voice): "Mommy! There's no "F" in the alphabet! How am I supposed to put the "F" words in order if there's no "F" in the alphabet???"
I stayed silent and just waited for her brain to return. Two seconds later she said, quietly, "Oh. Never mind, Mommy."
Perhaps we'll do some review of alphabetizing this summer. :)

Bird Watchers in the Making

I was on the treadmill this afternoon and the kids were outside rollerblading and scootering (maybe not a word?). Shiloh and Cora rollerbladed to the cul-de-sac up the street and came flying back yelling, "Mommy, we saw a PILEATED WOODPECKER!" :) I didn't know what a pileated woodpecker was until a few months ago; they've got quite a headstart on me. Then Cora turns to go inside, saying, "I think Lewis and Clark would have drawn him. I need to go get my nature journal!" I love those quirky kids.

In Which Jackson is Funny

Jackson and I were discussing the fox that seems to have taken up residence somewhere in the close vicinity of our backyard. She caught a squirrel hanging out at our birdfeeder a couple of days ago! Anyway, we were discussing what the fox eats versus what we eat.

Jackson: The fox eats squirrels. We don't eat squirrels, do we, Mommy?
Me: Well, Daddy has eaten squirrel before.
Jackson: WHAT?!?! (shakes his head ruefully) That's just crazy talk.

I Am Cool Now With My Links...

...except that now as I'm composing my posts, the pictures are not downloading into the text as pictures but as html code. I would have to figure out where each picture started and where it ended to add captions. I can't mess with this now! I have curricula to order and laundry to fold! Not to mention the fact that I have coupons to find online, because it's my new obsession. I could have a problem, but it's just saving money, right?
Anyway, please do notice the fixed link in my tea party post, however. Thank you, Julie! Daniel could have told me how to do it, and he's a little embarrassed that he has such an incompetent computer user for a wife but I figure if he wants to take over, fine. :)
So hello, all! How have you been? We're in our last two weeks of school, so we have had some pretty busy days lately. Our house is on schedule to be finished on May 9th, we'll have the walk-through on the 11th, and we'll close on June 1st. And, folks, that's right around the corner! Here's a little of what's been going on in April. As I mentioned before, I can't do captions. So here's a brief overview. We headed to Ohio for Spring Break, where it did indeed snow. It just justified in my mind that we'd made the right choice by moving away. :) The first pictures are of two sweet families from our old church in Columbus. The first family took us in on Sunday and fed our crew homemade spaghetti and meatballs. We hung out at their house all day, and I'm pretty sure it took them a day or two to recover. Hello, G Family! Remember you signed the release to agree to be on the blog! :) The second family is the Tullys, and you can see all their craziness here: See how awesome I am with the links now We met up with them again later in the week at the Creation Museum where I don't think we stopped talking for about 7 hours straight. The Museum was totally worth the price, especially since the G family let us use their guest passes. :) I am a good moocher. For Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we hung out with my dad and stepmother. We went to the Air and Space Museum on Monday, because that's a must-do if you're in the Dayton area. It just happened to be homeschool day! :) Jackson was impressed with the bombers. I don't think the girls were as impressed. We went swimming at an indoor pool on Tuesday (because, as I believe I mentioned, it SNOWED). The water was a little chilly for those in the family with 0% body fat - Abigail and Nathaniel. They bailed out early, and I went out with them because I'm just a wimp. On Wednesday we went to Carillon Park, which is a historical park about the history of the area. The kids really liked the one room schoolhouse and the transportation exhibit that had trains and trolleys. And here's a link to Carillon just because I can: Are you annoyed with the links yet? In between outings, we hung out at the house where Grandpa taught the girls how to play Yahtzee, Grandma showed them the robin who built a nest on their garage window, and the boys got to watch Cars with Grandpa. A good time was had by all, but I think that Grandma and Grandpa were amazed by how much food the Houseworths consume en masse. It's a little frightening if you're not used to it. Wednesday night I got to relive some old glory days by going to my stepbrother's daughter's track meet. It was chilly, but Grandma traveled prepared - she had hot chocolate mix and boiling hot water - and quilts. On Thursday, we headed down to Florence, Kentucky to go to the Creation Museum. You know what's coming now: The missing link Honestly, I crack myself up. We had a fabulous time there, and it was well worth the side excursion. The hotel was a little iffy, but we managed to leave with all our belongings intact. We stopped by the Kentucky Horse Park because it was right on the way home, but we couldn't even meander around without paying the entry fee. We didn't have time to do it justice, so we'll have to plan better next time. Nobody got carsick, we listened to Jonathan Park CDs on the way, and we had a great time as a family. That's what I call a good spring break. (I could call it great if it hadn't snowed. I'm not letting that go.)
Now I better get this big post published so I can go order some curricula. I also have to download more pictures from our trip to Williamsburg this past Monday. Wait a minute - do we actually have school lessons around here? Ha. Just kidding, there, Virginia authorities.
Oh - forgot the last two pictures. Aren't those dogwoods in our front yard beautiful?? Shiloh took the pictures to send to our missionary friends in Albania. She's a Southern girl, and we thought she might miss her some dogwood trees. I'm pretty sure they don't have dogwoods there, because, you know, it SNOWS in April. (really, I'll let it go sometime soon)
Love to all-

Help Me

How do I rename a link so that I don't look like the inexperienced computer hack that I am? I want my links to look cool and have awesome names instead of some unintellligible string of stuff. Please help.

Quick Link

Hey y'all-
I have a big post coming up from our trip to Ohio for Spring Break. This is not that post. :) For now, here's a link to a picture in a local newspaper from our Tax Day Tea Party.
Tax Day Tea Party Houseworths

Go to the 5th picture in the slideshow.
Now who's that good-lookin' family there?? Why, it's the Houseworths! :)

Rainy Thursday

Hey, all-
In my attempt to post more often, you will have to hear more boring stuff. :)
Here's what's going on here:
The pre-drywall meeting went well at the house today. I didn't attend because Shiloh has come down with a fever (Murphy's Law with children and preparing to go on trips). Poor Shiloh is resting in my bed, and I actually had to make the scones last night for ladies' Bible study since she started feeling under the weather last night. The scones were not as good as Shiloh's. Too chewy.

Nathaniel has begun the potty training process. I'm not going whole-hog yet since we're leaving to go on the trip and I don't want to stop every fifteen minutes. He's doing his solid business in the toilet all the time though, and I am VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY happy about that. This is the only area where I've seen a significant developmental delay; he just hasn't been ready up to this point. I think training might be a loooong process because that boy is a peeing machine (sorry, too much information).

I got a fabulous deal on Land's End dresses which are $9.99 right now for the long sleeved ones. Just thought I'd give a heads-up to those thrifty people out there.

I'm listening to sounds of the wonder twins playing school (because, of course, when you're on a break from schooling for the morning, you should naturally play school). They're also trying to teach Nathaniel how to make the letter "t". I think it's not working. "Try again, Nathaniel. You can do it this time." "Um, not like that, Nathaniel. Try again on this line." :)

I finally made Daniel watch "Facing the Giants" with me for our date night on Tuesday. He now understands why it was a little difficult to run on the treadmill while watching it the first time, what with all the crying and struggling to breathe. :) He liked it, too, but he didn't do the ugly-faced cry.

Here's a Jackson story to end this boring post. He was having trouble on his math facts sheet with the "plus twos" facts. I was asking him, "Do you remember what we do when we have an even number and we add two?" His response, "I know it's in my head; I just can't find it!" That will be my standard response to anything I can't remember now: "It's in my head; I just can't find it!" :)

I'm off to make some lunch. I'm thinking soup since it's gray and misty here. And to think we're preparing to go to Ohio where it might SNOW on Tuesday. SNOW! That's crazy talk.
Love,
Casey

A Blogging Coup

I hatched a plan to get my mom's crazy dancing on video. Oh, yes, Mom, you probably thought I forgot ALL about actually posting this video. You would be wrong. The kids love Oma's crazy dancing, so I told them to ask her to do her crazy dance, and Cora would come from behind to tape it. Here is the result. Enjoy, my friends.

Monday Monday

This is pretty meager posting lately - two posts per month is pitiful. I will try to do better. We've been on a roll with school, outside time, nature walks, running, and keeping up with laundry (which is itself a full-time job) and I've been lax on getting to the computer at night. I've been reading some interesting books lately instead. :) "Marriage to a Difficult Man" by Elisabeth Dodds is one of them. And no, I didn't check it out because I might get some help with my marriage. :) It's a biography of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards - it's been on my "to read" list for awhile, so I'm glad I got to it. I also read "Mayada - Daughter of Iraq," courtesy of Daniel's aunt. She always sends interesting books for me to read, and this was one of them. It's an autobiography of one of Iraq's privileged elite, who ended up being imprisoned unjustly under Saddam. She tells the stories of each one of her cellmates, and it was just horrifying. So that's what I've been doing - what are you up to? Here are a few random pictures to accompany this post. The first is the big hole in the ground that will be our home two months from now. :) This hole worried me greatly because it didn't seem very big at all when I took a picture of it, and I thought, "THEY'RE BUILDING THE WRONG FLOOR PLAN! HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN?" I came to find out from two friends of mine who had built houses that this is a common visual distortion - they both thought they had made horrendous mistakes when their houses were being built. Weird. :) The house looks FINE now; it's all framed in and has a roof on it, and it is the correct floor plan. Phew. That would be a hard thing to explain during the walk-through to look for mistakes before dry-walling: "Umm, excuse me, sir. You've poured the wrong floor plan and framed in the wrong house. Can we have a do-over?"

I put Jackson in our room one afternoon for a rest because Nathaniel was bothering him, and here is what I found when I went to wake him...he found Daddy's slippers.

Daniel was making dinner one night and Nathaniel was hanging out on the counter watching him. Nathaniel said he was cold, so Daniel asked him if he wanted to wear his ear covers. He said "yes, please." :)

Abigail Ramona Houseworth? What do you think?

This is Shiloh's new 'do. She hates having shorter hair but I love how great her hair looks. It's so shiny and full of body. She looks like a young lady! That's all for now. We're traveling up to Ohio on Spring Break at the end of this week (what? doesn't everyone choose Ohio for Spring Break? :)) and we'll hit the Creation Museum on the way back down. Daniel might talk me into a Civil War battlefield (excuse me, I was just corrected - a "War of Northern Aggression" battlefield).

Oh - I have to share Abigail's latest paragraph from grammar. The title was "Things I Like About My Family." Now, the writing at this stage is rather rote as they learn the mechanics of writing, so the sentences are somewhat ho-hum. But I thought the idea behind the paragraph was pretty cute:

Things I Like About My Family

There are two things I like about my family. These things are that I have big sisters to warn me about what I shouldn't do, and I have a Mommy and a Daddy to protect me. The first thing that I like about my family is that I have big sisters to warn me about things I shouldn't do. I like that they warn me so that I won't get in trouble. The second thing I like about my family is that Mommy and Daddy can protect me. I like that because some nights I am scared. My family protects me on both sides, and that is what I like about them.

:) Basically she's saying that we have her back as her family. I like that idea. :) Adah's was not as funny in its concept, but it was heart-melting. Her concluding sentence said, "Both of the things I like about my family show that they love me." And that was her own, not-prompted, not-solicited idea! Yea for bonding!!

I'm off to hang out with the family and possibly go to the library. We have to have goals, people.

Love,

Casey

I Forgot This One

Here's Jackson, reciting a poem for school. He just looked so cute I had to take a video.

And late-breaking news...Cora and Abigail came downstairs a little while ago and told me, "Adah would like her breakfast on a tray upstairs." Uh, huh. WHAT? I think I just looked at them blankly. Abigail said, "I think I'll just go tell her to come downstairs for breakfast." :)

March Is...

...definitely in like a lion, and out like a...well, the lion part didn't last more than a week. :) Last Monday we were buried under snow and out sledding. This Monday our temperature will be about 72. Love that! I love spring.

I have lots of news to catch up on! (Don't write to me about the preposition at the end of the sentence, Mom. I know. :) ) It's been busy, busy, busy around here, but a good, productive sort of busy. I hate feeling like I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off. My lack of posting has been due to this busyness, but also due to streaming Netflix (episodes of "As Time Goes By," the British comedy) and falling in love with running again. It happens every spring as I start to look around for road races in the area. The problem is that my treadmill is on the fritz. It's SAYING I'm going one speed, but I know my legs are not moving that fast. I think my motor may be dying, and it's not under warranty anymore. Bummer.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some pictures and videos of what's been happening around here. The first two pictures are totally random cuteness. Adah and Abigail love to dress up, but they come up with some pretty bizarre/unusual creations. Witness the following.

Next is a picture I snapped before family worship one evening. Daniel had a fire going, and all the kids decided that reading in front of the fire was a good idea. They look so snuggly! I will miss two things about this house...the yard and the wood burning fireplace. We will have small yard in the new house and a gas fireplace. (*sighing* while learning to be content in ALL things, especially in the fact that we will HAVE a brand new house! Really, I'm just being a big whiner.)

Nathaniel's birthday was February 26th, and we celebrated at home with spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and apple pie with ice cream for dessert. I'm not sure he knew what he was saying when I gave him the option: "Apple pie or cake for your birthday, Nathaniel?" but he sure seemed to be looking forward to it the day of his birthday because "apple pie!" was the first thing out of his mouth when I went to wake him up. The kids wanted to know if they got the day off from school because it was Nathaniel's birthday (they get their own birthdays off if it falls on a school day). Ha! Nice try, kids. Shiloh made his crown, they all helped to decorate and make signs, and they all made him some clay animals for presents. They also wrapped the animals, which was quite humorous in itself. I think they might have used a whole roll of tape. I love to see them loving on their little brother. Jackson was so distressed that he didn't get to make anything (they made them the day before during rest time) that we let him hand Nathaniel one of our presents. Nathaniel likes to be a well-dressed boy on Sundays (he ALWAYS asks for a tie!) so we got him two shirts with ties. He was a happy boy the following Sunday. He received lots of toys that will utilize his excellent fine motor skills. It's amazing - and yet a little sad - to see his dexterity. I know much of it comes from not having any other toys besides his fingers for the time he was in the orphanage. But who knows what God will bring from that? Maybe he'll fix things for a living since he works so well with his hands?

The second set of pictures comes from our day out sledding. We were going to go over to our pastor's house to sled with them, but they are later risers than our kids and our kids COULD NOT WAIT THAT LONG. So we bundled them up as best we could (we are NOT prepared for snow, and we need to get some better mittens for them!) and tried to figure out what to do for a sled. Yep, we don't have one of those either. Kroger sells them, but we couldn't get down our street to get one. Then Cora's friend, Susie, came down the street tugging her sled after her! She informed us that she had two more at home, so she walked back home with Cora to get them. We had SUCH a good time. We don't have a huge hill, but the kids didn't seem to mind. One of the most fun things was to see Adah being MUCH more adventurous than she usually is, and Nathaniel genuinely having a good time. A lot of the time he will be laughing at something, but he's actually being a clown and putting on a show. This time he was caught up in joy, and it was wonderful to see. Jackson also surprised us by being more physical than he usually is. He's cautious by nature, but he let it all hang out while sledding. He wrestled with Daddy in the snow and tried to take out Shiloh. He was completely soaked by the time we came in, but he didn't notice until two seconds after he got inside. Shiloh and Cora were their usual outdoorsy-types, sledding and sledding and sledding, and then going over to friends' houses and sledding and sledding and sledding. They LOVE to be outside. Abigail was a sweetheart and kept pushing Nathaniel down the hill time after time. She had a couple of good runs, but I think she was putting up with it for the sake of the hot chocolate later. Daniel, the only one suitably dressed for the day in his Afghanistan winter stuff, also went sledding. Uh-huh. It's not enough to have one shoulder surgery in a year, apparently. :) He was actually very careful, and he didn't run into any trees, so that was good. I also got a couple of runs in, and the kids cheered me on. It was just a fabulous day, and I was sorry to end it on a bad note with having to take Nathaniel and Adah to the doctor to get vaccinations. :( Nathaniel had a good check-up, though, for his 3 year appointment. He is in the 75th percentile for height and weight, which is a big jump from when he first came home. He was also chatting with the doctor telling her about Spiderman stickers, and the doctor was impressed with his language acquisition. She was also bowled over by his charm and good looks. :) Like I always tell Daniel, it's amazing that we MADE cute kids, and we ADOPTED cute kids as well. What are the odds?

On to some other news...Adah FINALLY has the training wheels off her bike! She was just so uncomfortable with the thought that I didn't want to push at all and figured she'd let me know when she was ready. Well, she let me know, and then she wasn't happy with the decision. She was deathly afraid of falling, so we started off in the grass. She fell a few times, learned that it didn't hurt too much, and then started balancing. She can make it down the driveway, into the yard and around a couple of trees now. Her confidence is building, and I am so happy to see her accomplishment. She worked HARD to overcome her fear. She would much rather give up when anything seems hard (wouldn't we all?) and I remember watching her from the treadmill as she tried to decide whether she would try a run down the hill or not (obviously I didn't leave her to figure things out on her own - I had just been helping her down a number of times and then told her she could give it a try on her own if she wanted). She sat there FOREVER before doing it. I watched so that I could see her face when she turned around in triumph with that big smile on her face. Way to go, Adah Tomata!

Some funnies from the kiddos:
We were driving along (love those random conversations that take place in the van!) and Jackson pipes up, "Mommy, it's so HARD!"
Me: "What's hard, Jackson?"
J: "It's so hard to decide what to be when I'm grown up! There are sooo many CHOICES! Should I be a fireman, a motorcycle man, a racecar driver, or a knight? I can't decide!"
Me: "Well, (trying to laugh only on the inside) I think it's a good thing you're only four and you have plenty of time to decide. Maybe as you get older you'll find that you like one thing more than the other and it will make it easier to decide."
J: "Yes, I saw on the video (an educational video from the library) that motorcycle men have to have a lot of training. Maybe I don't want to be that. Maybe a knight."
What do you say to that? I think I murmured, "Mmm. Hmm." How do you destroy a boy's dream that he can be a knight someday? :)

I try to be somewhat more purposeful in my parenting with Adah, verbalizing things that I don't necessarily verbalize with the bio kids because they have the foundation that Adah doesn't have with us. I will reassure her quite often that she is my daughter forever, that I will always love her, that I would do anything for her, etc. I was just being silly the other day and telling her while hugging her, "Adah Tomata, you are my daughter forever and I will never let you go. Well, okay, I'll let you go when you are a grown-up or when you want to be married. Then I'll let your husband have you, but not until then!"
She responded, "Or until we both die."
Well, all righty then. Way to be morbid about it. :)

Daniel had to go in for a steroid shot in his shoulder last Thursday in an attempt to ease the pain he's had since the surgery in November. Abigail, knowing Daniel's extreme dislike of doctors and needles, prayed for him that morning, "Dear Lode, please let Daddy not cry during his shot." I told Daniel, and her prayer was answered!

Jackson likes to check out a BUNCH of informative military books whenever we go to the library. He will sit and STUDY them during his rest time and tell me what he learned while studying. Currently, he's studying books about artillery, the Marines, rockets and missiles, aircraft carriers, and the Air Force at war. I think he's trying out all branches of the military before deciding. :) He came down the other day and said, "Mommy, what do you think I should be? (obviously a big theme right now) Do you think I should be in the Army or Marines?" I, not realizing that this was just a rhetorical question, responded, "Well, we obviously like the Army because Daddy was in the Army, but the Marines are pretty cool, too." Jackson, somewhat outraged, said, "WHAT? Do you WANT me to die?" :) Maybe there are lots of gruesome pictures in the Marines book? I'm not sure. He decided he wanted to be in the Army, but not to give out uniforms...to fight. (this was an entirely different conversation) I explained about how we felt pretty strongly about serving our country, but I think that part of the conversation went over his head. He just thought that if I wanted him to be a Marine, then I obviously had very little regard for his life.

Continuing on the same theme, he was asking while Daddy was gone for the "parachutes song." I told him I had no idea what he was talking about, and he responded with a sigh, "Ask Daddy. HE knows what I'm talking about." Daniel did know what he was talking about and downloaded the album onto his iPod since he only has a tape. It's the 82nd Airborne chorus singing, "Put on your boots, boots, boots, and parachutes, chutes, chutes..." Now he plays it during teeth-brushing time and everyone sings and marches. To say that Jackson was delighted is an understatement - his dimples grew to gargantuan proportions when he heard Daniel hook the iPod up to the speakers.

And lastly, (how long can I make this post?!) I am so delighted to have a daughter who bakes! Shiloh got done with school early on Thursday and was looking around for something to do. She asked if she could make something, and I said, "Sure, just check to make sure you have all the ingredients before you start." So she made a chocolate cake! All I had to do was make the coffee to go in it and she did everything else. That started a cooking spree where she ended up making scones for lunch on Friday and biscuits for our "breakfast dinner" on Saturday. She's very careful, and she really enjoys it. I was impressed that she tackled biscuits. They're pretty tough to make correctly, and they were so yummy! We will host Bible study at our house next week, and she's looking through the cookbooks to decide what to bake. I have discovered that it's absolutely worth it to have them make messes and add more time to my prep work when they're younger and "helping" in the kitchen. The one-on-one time has been great, having a dinner helper every night. Jackson can even do more than I thought he would.
Well, I better get this post published and see about breakfast for the kiddos. We're on a new schedule doing school on Saturdays and taking Mondays off, so they're sleeping in. Today is hair day for Adah (picking out teeny braids - a very long process!) and shoe shopping day for everyone else. All of a sudden they've ALL outgrown their shoes? How does this happen??
Love to everyone-
Casey
